District Membership and K Family Friends,

I have been working diligently to obtain missing email addresses and correct those that are not good ones.  This issue of the electronic Kiwanian is going out to nearly 2,800 of our district membership.  Please share a copy of this publication with those in your club that do not have the ability to receive email communication. If you wish to receive this publication at another address, please let me know at rmdkiwanis@comcast.net.  Secretaries - if you have not sent me your club's internal roster with email addresses in the last month, please do so as soon as possible.  Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

When you receive electronic communications that I send through Constant Contact - it will appear to be coming only to you.  Please be assured it is going to everyone in the district with an email address, so you should not need to forward to others in your club or division.

Have a very Merry Christmas and the best of all things in the New Year to come!

Camp Kids Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.

 Governor Kelly Steck James

Kelly Clown Face Hands down, the best thing about being the governor of the Rocky Mountain District is meeting all of you extraordinary Kiwanians and hearing about the invaluable work you are doing in your communities!

I have truly enjoyed visiting divisions 2, 3, 9, 14, 15 and 16 during the last two months.  My heartfelt gratitude goes out to those divisions and their respective Lt. Governors, Diane Foster, Dave Webster, Carl Reid, Bob Johnston, Ken Bradley and Bob Garretson for their hospitality.  One of those visits took place on Halloween at a "Kids Against Hunger" food packaging event... whoever left me the message that this was a costume party is going to pay for it!

During my visits to those divisions we've talked about three things; fun, relevance and value.  As we enter the holiday season, we also enter a season of service.  Clubs should be taking the time to evaluate their service initiatives and measure the "fun factor", relevance and value of the service they are providing.  Now may be a great time to undertake a new project.  Perhaps even a project that encourages participation from non-Kiwanians in the community.  Remember, right now is the time to share your passion for service and give another individual the opportunity to change a life and make a difference.

I have so very much to be thankful for this year, but I am eternally grateful for my Kiwanis family.  For the love and prayers that you have shared with my family over the past six months, for the unselfish service that you render each and every day.  And, for the opportunity to be a part of something so extraordinary and meaningful that it brings me to tears.  My love and appreciation to each of you for all that you are and all that you do.  You certainly do make a difference to me!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from my family to yours!

Midwinter Conference 2010

Midwinter Conference is a time for Celebration, Education, Entertainment, and Inspiration. It is a time for clubs to rejuvenate and plan the second half of their club's administrative year. It is a time to reflect on what has worked well in your club and what aspects of your club may need a springtime tune-up. This is the time to share your successes and failures with other Kiwanians. Ask other clubs what they do successfully and how they do it. Membership and Growth specialists will be available to talk one on one about your club's membership goals.

Once again the midwinter conference will be at the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center in Longmont, Colorado.  The registration form is due by February 5, 2010 and can be downloaded at Midwinter Registration.  Information on registering at the hotel is on page 2 of the registration.

  • Friday afternoon, February 19th, there will be a District Board Lunch and Working Meeting as well as Club Leadership Training for club presidents and secretaries.  Incoming presidents and secretaries should receive  CLE education from the district or online at Kiwanis International before taking office.  Kids Against Hunger will be set up for packaging event on Friday afternoon. Come early and help with packaging.
  • Friday night is the opening night of the Broadway musical, "Chicago", at the Boulder Dinner Theatre - busses will be provided this year. The whole center section has been reserved just for our group.
  • Start the day with the Opening Session Breakfast and hear about all the changes and new ideas taking place in Kiwanis.  Seating will be available for those not participating in the breakfast meal.
  • In addition to educational and inspirational forums, there will be a "Kids Against Hunger" hands on food packaging event going on all day.  Stop in and spend an hour packaging meals.  This is a really rewarding project!
  • The speaker at the Interclub Luncheon will be Mike Harris of the Jefferson County District Attorney's office.  He will be speaking on "Crimes Against Children."  Our Governor's of Key Club and CKI will give us updates on their respective organizations.
  • Saturday night is the Governor's Banquet complete with leadership awards for 2008-2009.  Following the awards, it is on to Las Vegas at our Casino Night.  Come prepared to strut your stuff at the gaming tables - no real money allowed.
  • Sunday winds down with the district board meeting in the morning.

Make plans now for Midwinter Conference 2010 - See you in Longmont!

Rocky Mountain District Kiwanis Foundation

  RMDKF logo

The Rocky Mountain District Kiwanis Foundation is an organization created by the Rocky Mountain District of Kiwanis International in 1983 to receive charitable donations and disburse funds for charitable purposes - essentially, to constitute the philanthropic arm of the Rocky Mountain District.  All donations received by the Foundation are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law.  The Foundation represents all Kiwanians in the Rocky Mountain District, who by virtue of being members of a Kiwanis Club are also members of the Foundation.

The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of 21 members(all Kiwanians), including the Governor, the Governor-Elect and the Immediate Past Governor of the District.

The Foundation has about $300,000 in assets, split between various endowment (restricted) funds and an unrestricted fund.

The principal source of funding for the Foundation is contributions from Kiwanis Clubs and individual Kiwanians (about $70,000 last year).  In addition to direct monetary contributions, the Foundation now receives money from the gift basket silent auctions held at the District Convention.

The principal recipient of funds from the Foundation is the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute (KPTI), which is a joint project with the Children's Hospital in Denver that the District and the Foundation have supported since 1994.  The Foundation donated $55,000 to KPTI in each of the last two years, and has pledged $60,000 in contributions for the current year.  Kiwanis contributions, while significant, still represent less than 50% of the funding for KPTI.

In addition to KPTI, the Foundation makes grants to Kiwanis Clubs within the District to assist them with their charitable projects.  Among the guidelines for such grants are that the total amount of grants to any one Club cannot exceed $2,500 in any administrative year; any grant request must be for a specific project, not simply for general funding of the Club; the project must benefit children; and matching funds will benefit any grant request.

We encourage you to learn more about, and to support, YOUR Foundation and its activities.  Feel free to contact the Foundation's Executive Director, Ramona Richers, at rlr@cmconline.com, or its President, Jack Forhan, at jff@forhanlaw.com, for that purpose.

Governor Elect Bert West

Bert West

Thank you Kiwanians! We need to all commend Governor Kelly and her board for the hard work they are doing. Lets all pitch in and help her team in their efforts to build the new club they are working on. A new club will provide the same wonderful service to its community as you do for yours.

Please take the opportunity to take a look at the Kiwanis one website and check out the online training tools. They are useful and a great tool for your entire club not just the officers.

I am looking forward to meeting with the new Lt. Governors and to begin preparations for next year. We are currently planning the Lt Governor training and it should be Fun and exciting.

As your governor elect it is my responsibility to build a team for next year. I have contacted several chairs and asked them to remain in their position to have continued continuity. On that note, I have received several inquiries about the office of district secretary. I have been asked if I would be willing to open the position up to other applicants and can they apply for the position. So to be fair to all, I request that if you are interested in the position of District Secretary that you send me a resume. I have asked several people to help me with this process and we will be conducting interviews around midwinter conference.

Remember, your Friends and acquaintances will have as much Fun as a Kiwanian as you do. So go out and invite them to join you the next time you flip pancakes or whatever project your club is doing.

Key Leader Keeps Growing!

By: Barb Fuller, District Chair

Thank you to all the Kiwanis Clubs that worked so hard to help us this year.  We had a big challenge to face. We needed to expand to a second site since our Windy Peak weekend has been so successful. To achieve our growth we added a new Key Leader at Anderson Camp in Gypsum, Colorado on October 2-4.  Our annual weekend was held October 23-25 at Windy Peak Outdoor Lab School in Bailey, Colorado.  At both sites the students had a wonderful time meeting new friends and learning life-enhancing lessons in teamwork, values, respect, and personal growth.   Our event facilitators, Dennis Murcheson and Karen Ramos, were very impressed with the quality of our student facilitators and the response from the participants.  We were also fortunate to have the Key Leader Program Manager, Dick Peterson, join us for the Anderson Camp weekend.

Starting a new event was so rewarding. The students and teachers on the Western Slope were so grateful to have a professional leadership program so close to home. On post-event surveys all of the students agreed that they now felt more self-confident, knew how to identify excellence, and that they did live with the characteristics of a Key Leader. Over 90 percent said that they have healthy relationships with their peers and adults.

The Kiwanians who volunteered their weekend to take part deserve a big thank you.  Karl Oelke, our site coordinator on the Western Slope, worked tirelessly promoting the program and recruiting a dedicated group of volunteers that took care of all the logistics. Greg Henika, site coordinator for Windy Peak, also put in long hours this year to help an event with 100 people run smoothly. Thank you to all of the chaperones and Kiwanis helpers who helped with set up and greeted the students with their smiles. We couldn't do without you.

WE NEED YOUR HELP.  Any time you build a new program, you need to give it a chance to develop roots and grow. Key Leader is no exception to this rule. The weekend at Anderson Camp was a great success, but we need more students to attend. The Rocky Mountain District Board has promised to support Key Leader on the Western Slope again next fall. This is a big leap of faith. Key Leader requires that each event has a minimum of 60 students registered. This year we had 35. If we do not reach 60 people next year, our District will have to pay the difference.  It is imperative that we work hard to bring students to that event. There are two things your club can do.

ü  Please talk to communities on the Western Slope and encourage their high schools to send students. Adopt a school and provide a scholarship.

ü  Encourage schools in other parts of the District to attend the new event when there are conflicts in dates with the Windy Peak weekend.

Next year's events will be

October 15-17, 2010   Aspen, CO . Details are still being finalized for this.

October 22-24, 2010  Windy Peak, Bailey, CO.

More than 12,000 people have joined Kiwanis since the beginning of the 1-2-3 You Hold the Key program because members did a simple thing. They invited someone to join.
